Availability | Quentin is romantically unavailable at this point -- he may have "romantic friendship" type of feelings for some people, but Eliot pretty much has his whole heart. Sexually, though, he's still open. In general, He's willing to sleep with nearly anyone who expresses interest in him. He will not pursue anyone who doesn't show any signs of being into him or expresses that they're sexually incompatible with him, but he doesn't really fuss himself trying to say no to anyone. Everyone can have at least one try, and he's pretty comfortable in enjoying no-strings-attached or just-friends sex, even deeper-feeling stuff with people he's got the romantic friendship thing with. He is, however, socially awkward, so he may miss cues, obvious hints, or flirting unless asked outright. Directness is a good thing. |
Turn-Ons: | being slightly mean to him; straightforwardness; feeling useful or like he can solve a problem for you |
Turn-Offs: | making him feel stupid or moving the goalposts; going past "slightly mean" and being an asshole; pushing boundaries with his relationship (there are so few, it shouldn't be hard not to do this) |
Other: | Generally, Quentin prefers to be submissive, but in very rare situations he'll switch (he needs to feel comfortable with his mental health and comfortable with the person he's with in order to switch, which simply doesn't happen that often in Duplicity). Similarly, with men (or women who peg) he prefers to bottom. |
OOC: | I'd prefer to wait on starting stuff until we can tag at a consistent pace, and I prefer to get threads at least into the smut before ending them, so if you think you're probably going to want to drop stuff and start fresh soon, let's handwave instead! |
Word prefs: | For male genitals my favorite is cock, but dick is good too. Prick and other slightly insulting or diminutive words are good for a dick that's not in use, so to speak. I'm not a fan of more flowery terms (sex, manhood) for male genitals. For female genitals, cunt is good, pussy works, talking around it (inside her, between her legs) is fine. Flowery terms are good if used sparingly. For butts, hole is my favorite but ass, asshole, rear entrance, other entrance, back door, etc are all fine. I don't love more "juvenile" terms like butt or butthole. Talking around it also works, as long as it can't be confused with a vagina. There really isn't a good sexy word for breasts, so breasts and tits are both fine, or bust for the general area. |
Name: Quentin Coldwater Door: door pass for submissive Canon: The Magicians Canon Point: 3.13, on the way to Castle Blackspire Age: mid 20s (23 in season 1, unclear how much time each season covers, but probably in the 25-26 range) Appearance: Quentin is shortish, around 5'8, and of a medium-to-stocky build. picture History: wiki link Personality: negative bitchy - Quentin has a mean, bitter streak to him. It comes from understandable places in his personality (he is ultimately a disappointed optimist more than anything) but it can manifest as acting bratty or bitchy, even toward people he loves. An example is when he was nursing a small crush on Eliot, and described Mike as "um, Eliot's boyfriend, I guess." He does this with that sort of slow blink and a head shake, like the idea of Eliot having a boyfriend is personally offensive. gif evidence Another example is when he was angry at Julia and threw his former crush on her in her face -- at every other time in the series he's pretty clearly over this and doesn't blame her or think she was obligated to go out with him, but in this moment he wants to hurt her, so he implies that she's done something wrong by not being with him. Season three has a good example that shows this trait persisting over years, too -- he's been working on something for a few years with Eliot, and they're having what appears to be an argument they've had before, with Eliot saying "you know exactly what that means" when Quentin questions something. In response, Quentin just kicks over a well-organized stack for no apparent reason other than needing an outlet for his annoyance. He then deadpans "oops." difficulty reading others - It's a common joke in the fandom that Quentin doesn't need a swear jar, he needs a "telling people about Fillory when I wasn't asked" jar. He really has no sense of whether other people are interested in what he's saying or on the same page as him. There are copious examples of this in early canon, being pretty insufferable about telling people about the Fillory books (he even corrects an actual tour guide during a tour, out loud to everyone, objectively the worst possible thing you can do on a tour). A more subtle but equally relevant example is spread across season 3: while everyone is on the key quest, Quentin consistently uses "our" and "everyone" and "the troops," treating the quest as a group effort, while almost everyone around him talks about "Quentin's" and "counting on you" and "your quest," clearly viewing it as Quentin's thing alone. avoidant - Quentin is very socially awkward, which causes him to prefer to avoid things rather than deal with them. Any kind of negative socialization just appears to hurt like fuck, not like "poor baby will be sad" but like in the way a stubbed toe hurts like fuck, a kind of shitty annoying hurt, and you'll avoid it at all costs. He physically walks around a large tree to get away from someone confronting him, coming around the other side to peer resentfully after them. By nature of his canon, Quentin does end up dealing with interpersonal shit a lot, but it's almost always reluctantly. It's a symbol of his personal growth and his love for Eliot that by season 4 he's actively dealing with his feelings because obviously no one else is going to save Eliot, so he has to, by any means necessary. We can see that he's still socially avoidant and just overcoming it in season 4 when he has to deal briefly with his mother, after his father's death, and he clearly does Not want to -- the situation is different because dealing with his mother isn't going to help save Eliot at all, so he reverts to his preference which is to get rid of her as soon as possible. positive brave - It's noted by several people in the series how brave Quentin is. The most notable example is when he defies his avoidant trait to ask Eliot to be with him, just after they've remembered spending fifty years together in a relationship. Eliot rejects him, and when reflecting on this moment and his regrets later, he says to (a projection of) Quentin "Know that when I'm braver, it's because I learned it from you." Quentin is a good example of the maxim about how courage is being afraid and doing it anyway. He's clearly afraid to face the Beast, afraid to kill a god, afraid to confront an abusive former professor, but he does these things anyway for the good of others. He yells at gods and calls them on their shit more than once, which definitely takes bravery. Probably the most dramatic example of his courage comes in season four, when a primordial god more powerful than half a dozen other gods, who doesn't know how to do anything but want and needs to be loved constantly, has its hands around Quentin's neck. Instead of cringing or trying to make it stop, Quentin shows his steel by lifting his chin, looking it in the eye, and telling it "break my bones and strangle me, but if you keep hurting Eliot, I will abandon you." sense of wonder - Despite all life has put him through, Quentin still believes good things are out there, he just has to find them. He holds on to the good things with both hands when he finds them, and he refuses to become jaded, still taking joy in the simple things and letting the big stuff overwhelm him with awe. A good example of this is when he gets to go on a quest on a boat in season 3, and there's a whole montage of him basically playing sailors like a little kid because he has the coolest setting for it ever -- the ship is sentient and he's technically still a king so he doesn't really have any actual responsibility on the boat. Powers and Abilities: Quentin is a magician, which means he can cast spells. Theoretically, anyone in his canon can do small amounts of magic -- it's accessed by specific words and physical gestures -- but anything more complicated than a few stuttering sparks can only be produced by people with Potential, like Quentin. In terms of magical competence, Quentin is generally middle of the road. All magicians have a Discipline, which is a type of magic they're better at than others and that comes most naturally to them. Quentin's Discipline is Repair of Small Objects. Some spells we see Quentin cast include: -translocation spells (making an object disappear from somewhere and appear in his hand) -repairing a model airplane, a coffee mug, etc -shaping exhaled smoke into complex figures (a ship, a dragon) -mind controlling a swarm of bees to move as he directs them -scrubbing his image from security footage We also see Quentin writing his own spells from an understanding of how the parts go together. He's fluent in several languages for purposes of magic, and has a firm grounding in higher math. Magicians are generally very intelligent people, because it's necessary in order to understand and perform complex spells. Magic encompasses many disciplines and types, including illusion, physical magic, telepathy and mind magic, healing, knowledge, and nature. Quentin can perform at least basic spells in all of these, but as his Discipline is in physical magic, he'll always be better at physical spells (like the translocation, repair, and smoke spells listed above). Time travel and reality bending are possible with magic (horomancy is a subset of knowledge magic, as listed above), and we see them done in canon, but Quentin doesn't know any spells for things like that, so he doesn't need any nerfing (of course, if he did somehow learn a spell like this, it just wouldn't work, as if he were doing it wrong). Spells have two limiting factors: a) a lot of spells require some kind of physical component or require some specific Circumstance, like a position of stars or a body of water, etc. b) A person can only cast so much magic at once before it consumes them and they die. Between these two limiting factors and Quentin's inherent aptitude levels, he's not really powerful enough to be a noteworthy threat. Inventory: -A compendium of the Fillory and Further book series, printed in one copy -a sturdy leather messenger bag -eliot's flask Samples: thinking communicating Anything Else: Quentin is never given a sexuality label in either the book or the show, but he has relationships with a man and with women in the show, so realistically he's bisexual. He's also not given a mental health diagnosis in the show, but the book specifies that he's autistic. I don't bring this up often in tags unless I really can't avoid naming it (like someone asking directly), but show canon still gave him plenty of traits that fit the label, so broadly I let that paint the picture for me. |
